CUT DESNA APTRIANA. The Skull
Anatomy of Sumatran Rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis). Under The Direction of
NURHIDAYAT and CHAIRUN NISA‟.
This study was conducted with
aim to describe the gross anatomical structure of the skull of a 26 years old
female Sumatran rhino. The present study noted some characteristics in the
skull of Sumatran rhino. The sutures among the bones were unclear. The surfaces
of several bones including the nasal and the frontale bones were rough. These
rough surfaces might provide as a base for the horn. The area of the eye orbit
was relatively small and the zygomatic arch was less developed, formed only by
the zygomatic process of temporal bone and the temporal process of zygomatic
bone, respectively. The occipital bone was wide while in the mandible the
masseteric fossa was deep and rough and the area of mandibular angle was thick.
The dental formula was I1/0 C0/0 PM3/3 M3/2 without the incisive teeth on the
lower jaw. CT-scanned images revealed a relative small brain cavity and well
developed nasal cavity. The present results suggested that the Sumatran rhino
might have a small brain, less developed eye but well developed olfactory
function. The data were discussed and compared with those of other animals such
as horse and pigs that have a close phylogenetic and anatomic relationship with
the rhino.
