MUAMAR DARDA. The Anatomical Characteristics of The
Body Skeleton of Javan Rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus). Supervised by NURHIDAYAT
and SUPRATIKNO.
Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is a species of
large mammals on earth which is critically endangered and only be found in Ujung
Kulon National Park (UKNP), Banten Province, Indonesia. The aim of this
research is to study the anatomical characteristics of body skeleton of the
javan rhino. The skeleton structure is related to the functions of supporting
the big body size and its behaviors. This study used a set of javan rhino’s
body skeleton. In this research, the parameters used are observing the specific
body parts of the skeleton and comparing skeletons of the sumatran rhino and
domestic animals. The naming system on anatomical structure were done by
referring to Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria (ICVGAN 2012). The anatomy
characteristics of the javan rhino skeleton is similar to those of the sumatran
rhino but has a greater body size. There are differences were found, which are
ala atlantis is longer, processus spinosus os axis have no protrusions,
dorsoventral movement of atlantoaxial joint more developed, processus
transversus et spinosus of cervical bones more developed, the processus
spinosus of thoracic bones grew more towards kaudodorsal especially on first
nine thoracic bones, narrower flank, and sacral bones which are arranged more
compact and rigid. Generally, the skeleton of the javan rhino is tight, strong
and compact, with protrusions and rough aspects as strong attachment sites for
muscles and ligaments. The whole skeleton is arranged as it is to withhold the
rigidity and protect the body structure of the javan rhino in relevance to its
habitat and behaviors.
