Javan Gibbon (Hylobates moloch Audebert 1797) in Gunung Papandayan Protection

Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch
Audebert 1797) is one of the endemic primates spesies in Indonesia, distributed
in West and Central Java. This research has been counducted in Gunung
Papandayan Protection Forest from June to December 2008, to: asses population
estimate of the Javan gibbon, and to provide information on the availability of
feeding and sleeping trees. Population survey has been performed using line
transect method at three locations, with nine repeatation at each transect.
Population density of Javan gibbon in Gunung Papandayan Protection Forest was
2.8 individuals/km2 and group density was 1.2 group/km2 . The estimation of
Javan gibbon was 127 individuals and 55 groups. Food sources and sleeping
trees, identification were conducted at the same time population survey was
performed. There were 31 feeding trees spesies of 15 families and 12 spesies of
nine families used by the gibbons as sleeping trees. Altingia excelsa Noronha,
Schima wallichii (DC.) Korth, Glochidion rubrum Blume, Castanopsis argentea
Blume and Beilscharriedia wightii Benth were dominant vegetation at the site.
