Potency of Walik and Kampong Chicken in Sumedang District, West Java

Kampong and Walik chickens are important local chicken breeds found in Indonesia. However, the traditional management practices applied by farmers result low productivities of those chickens. The aim of this research was to investigate the potency of Kampong and Walik chicken in Sumedang District, West Java. There were 33 respondents interviewed in this research. The research results show that women were primarily responsible the care and management of the chicken under backyard system. The chickens farming system applied by the farmers were semi intensive with scavenging system (88%), and intensive (12%). Traditionally, most of the farmers (64%) selected the chicken breeds by their own traditional knowledge. Broken rice, rice hulls, and household by product were feedstuffs provided for the chickens. Farmers applied modern (73%) and indigenous (27%) health care and management to prevent and control diseases of the chickens. Egg production and hatchability of scavenging chickens were higher (11 eggs/clutch/hen; 92,71%) than intensive one (10 eggs/clutch/hen; 86,07%). A rural household with scavenging system earned 1.582.482,45 IDR in a year from a flock of 78 chickens with an average of 11 layers, and 14 eggs. Walik chicken had a higher body weight with Kampong chicken. However, the correlation rate (r) of Kampong chiken was higher (cock = 0,781 and hen = 0,801) compared to Walik chicken (cock = 0,529 and hen = 0,717). A rural household with intensive system earned 1.464.000,00 IDR in a year from a flock of 63 chickens with an average of 4 layers, and 12 eggs. The potency Walik chicken is higher to be developed than the Kampong chicken. However, the Walik chicken productivities have to be properly investigated to improve their potencies. Giving education for improved management system is also an alternative strategy to increase chicken productivities and household income.
